On Today’s Gospel

Posted: July 3, 2023 by CatholicJules in Personal Thoughts & Reflections

Did St Thomas doubt the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ? Why is he labelled as doubting Thomas? Is this how the phrase came to be?

The more I dwell on today’s Gospel I feel drawn to the faith, yes FAITH not doubt of St Thomas! Let’s dwell on the last words from his mouth before going backwards a little in today’s reflection. He saw not just with his eyes but with his heart when he uttered the faith filled words “My Lord and my God!” The same conviction was heard from St Thomas a few chapters earlier when he declared, “Let us go to die with him” (cf. John 11:16) when Jesus announced his decision to return to the city that had plans to kill him. Perhaps he just could not believe that His Lord and God whom he loved dearly would choose to appear before the rest of his disciples while he was not with them! And have you wondered why St Thomas was not with the rest? Who were all in hiding for fear of being killed by the Jewish leaders. Perhaps it was love of his brethren that he was out buying food for them; and even perhaps getting word to their families that they were all safe and sound.

O Lord You dwell in my heart, mind, body and soul! I declare with all my heart  that You are my Lord and God! Amen

First reading

Ephesians 2:19-22 ·

In Christ you are no longer aliens, but citizens like us

You are no longer aliens or foreign visitors: you are citizens like all the saints, and part of God’s household. You are part of a building that has the apostles and prophets for its foundations, and Christ Jesus himself for its main cornerstone. As every structure is aligned on him, all grow into one holy temple in the Lord; and you too, in him, are being built into a house where God lives, in the Spirit.

Gospel

John 20:24-29

‘My Lord and my God!’

Thomas, called the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. When the disciples said, ‘We have seen the Lord’, he answered, ‘Unless I see the holes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put my hand into his side, I refuse to believe.’ Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors were closed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. ‘Peace be with you’ he said. Then he spoke to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put it into my side. Doubt no longer but believe.’ Thomas replied, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him:

‘You believe because you can see me.

Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.’
