God be with you on this Lenten journey we embark on today……Amen

  • For those who are serving in a Ministry but have become disenchanted or disheartened.
  • For those who are serving but feel that God doesn’t know how much they labour or feel unrewarded when they see others seemingly happier doing as they please.
  • For those who are not using their gifts provided for by their Creator.

Malachi 3:13-18

13 You have spoken harsh words against me, says the LORD. Yet you say, “How have we spoken against you?” 14 You have said, “It is vain to serve God. What do we profit by keeping his command or by going about as mourners before the LORD of hosts? 15 Now we count the arrogant happy; evildoers not only prosper, but when they put God to the test they escape.”

16 Then those who revered the LORD spoke with one another. The LORD took note and listened, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who revered the LORD and thought on his name. 17 They shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, my special possession on the day when I act, and I will spare them as parents spare their children who serve them. 18 Then once more you shall see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

Personal Reflection

All Saints have a past of an arduous but fruitful journey as all sinners do have a future of one.

Let us begin with our first little step today in the direction of our Lord Jesus Christ….. Amen

The Hearts And Minds Of All Believers Were One

Posted: January 31, 2012 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys, Memory Book

From a commentary on the psalms by Saint Hilary of Poitiers, bishop
(Ps. 132: PLS 1, 244-245)

Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brothers to dwell in unity! It is good and pleasant for brothers to dwell in unity, because when they do so their association creates the assembly of the Church. The term “brothers” describes the bond of affection arising from their singleness of purpose.

We read that when the apostles first preached, the chief instruction they gave lay in this saying: The hearts and minds of all believers were one. So it is fitting for the people of God to be brothers under one Father, to be united under one Spirit, to live in harmony under one roof, to be limbs of one body.

It is pleasant and good for brothers to dwell in unity. The prophet suggested a comparison for this good and pleasant activity when he said: It is like the ointment on the head which ran down over the beard of Aaron, down upon the collar of his garment. Aaron’s oil was made of the perfumes used to anoint a priest. It was God’s decision that his priest should have his consecration first, and that our Lord should be so anointed, but not visibly, by those who are joined with him. Aaron’s anointing did not belong to this world; it was not done with the horn used for kings, but with the oil of gladness. So afterward Aaron was called the anointed one as the Law prescribed.

When this oil is poured out upon men of unclean heart, it snuffs out their lives, but when it is received as an anointing of love, it exudes the sweet odor of harmony with God. As Paul says, we are the goodly fragrance of Christ. So just as it was pleasing to God when Aaron was anointed priest with this oil, so it is good and pleasant for brothers to dwell in unity.

Now the oil ran down from his head to his beard. A beard adorns a man of mature years. We must not be children before Christ except in the restricted scriptural sense of being children in wickedness but not in our way of thinking. Now Paul calls all who lack faith, children, because they are too weak to take solid food and still need milk. As he says: I fed you with milk rather than the solid food for which you were not yet ready; and you are still not ready.

Why Do We?

Posted: January 30, 2012 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys

Why grief for those who adorn themselves not for worship of Him who created them? Why weep for those that have departed in bad faith or formation? Why be anxious for those who have hardened their hearts? Why mourn for those who are casuistic in faith, morals and practice? If they would but hear His Voice…..

Why? Because if we love Jesus, and are filled with His love then we too are constantly seeking out the one lost sheep, while the ninety nine are praying for it’s return.

Let us pray for the conversion of sinners and for one another that we may truly be one in communion. That we strive always to grow in holiness, faith, love and charity. We ask this through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Amen.

Today’s Gospel Reading Mark 4:21-25

21 And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a bushel, or under a bed, and not on a stand? 22 For there is nothing hid, except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. 23 If any man has ears to hear, let him hear.” 24 And he said to them, “Take heed what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. 25 For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

Notes And Personal Reflection

  • (V21) Do I glorify God by spreading His Truth, Light, Way and Word? Do I share Jesus with everyone or hide him deep within?
  • Bushel and Bed perhaps things pertaining to the palate or idleness. The disobedient ear, the love for the delights of one’s palate and rest.
  • Do I hide the Word of God under the love of this transitory life and of carnal allurements ?(Bede)
  • Do I spread His Light standing firm and upright like an oil lamp placed high up on a lamp stand for all to see?
  • The candle within us is that of our intellectual nature, and it shines either clearly or obscurely according to the proportion of our illumination. For if meditations which feed the light, and the recollection with which such a light is kindled, are neglected, it is presently extinguished. (Chrysostom)
  • Be not ashamed of the Gospel, but amidst the darkness of persecution raise the light of the word of God upon the candlestick of your body, keeping fixedly in your mind that day, when the Lord will throw light upon the hidden places of darkness, for then everlasting praise awaits you, and everlasting punishment your adversaries. (Bede)
  • (V22) The parables have come to light, nothing is hidden. Jesus has given His Word to us and planted it in our hearts. Do we allow His Word to grow? To be planted and spread unto others by our words and deeds?
  • Everything He spoke to them in private was meant to be openly manifested, and to come forth into public view. It is to the Apostles, words similar to these are addressed on several occasions, but with a different object (Matt. 10:26, 27).
  • (V23) And let him learn that he is not to bury in unjust silence the instructions or the examples I give him; but must exercise them for the light and direction of others.
  • That is, if any man have a sense for understanding the word of God, let him not withdraw himself, let him not turn his ear to fables, but let him lend his ear to search those things which truth hath spoken, his hands for fulfilling them, his tongue for preaching them. There follows, And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear.(BEDE)
  • For each of us, whether he have done good or evil, is brought to light in this life, much more in that which is to come. For what can be more hidden than God, nevertheless He Himself is manifested in the flesh. It continues, If any man have ears to ear, let him hear.(Theophylact)
  • Do we go often to the Sacrament of Reconciliation so that our ears can be unclogged to listen to the Word? When the sins of the flesh are washed away, we draw closer to God our Father, our heart and mind are one with Him.
  • (V24) The more we listen attentively to the Word allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us, together with the teaching tradition of the Holy Church established by Christ, the more we receive. That is the Graces we need to grow in faith are abundantly bestowed upon us to share with others.
  • That is, that none of those things which are said to you by me should escape you. With what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you, that is, whatsoever degree of application ye bring, in that degree ye will receive profit. (THEOPHYLACT)
  • Or else, If ye diligently endeavour to do all the good which ye can, and to teach it to your neighbours, the mercy of God will come in, to give you both in the present life a sense to take in higher things, and a will to do better things, and will add for the future an everlasting reward. And therefore it is subjoined, And to you shall more be given.(BEDE)
  • (V25) As in the parable of the Talents, more will be given for those who use the gifts for building the Kingdom of God. In this parable those who do not shine with the Light of Christ, brightly and boldly for all the world to see then they can expect that the light will be extinguished.
  • PSEUDO-JEROME. According to the measure of his faith the understanding of mysteries is divided to every man, and the virtues of knowledge will also be added to them. It goes on: For he that hath, to him shall be given; that is, he who hath faith shall have virtue, and he who hath obedience to the word, shall also have the understanding of the mystery. Again, he who, on the other hand, has not faith, fails in virtue; and he who has not obedience to the word, shall not have the understanding of it; and if he does not understand, he might as well not have heard.
  • PSEUDO-CHRYSOSTOM. (Vict. Ant. e Cat. in Marc.) Or else, He who has the desire and wish to hear and to seek, to him shall be given. But he who has not the desire of hearing divine things, even what he happens to have of the written law is taken from him.
  • BEDE. (ubi sup.) For sometimes a clever reader by neglecting his mind, deprives himself of wisdom, of which he tastes the sweetness, who, though slow in intellect, works more diligently.
  • CHRYSOSTOM. (non occ.) Again it may be said, that he hath not, who has not truth. But our Lord says that he hath, because he has a lie, for every one whose understanding believes a lie, thinks that he has something.
  • They who do not profit by the knowledge of the word of God, shall in punishment of their neglect, lose the advantage which they may seem to have, since it will turn in the end to their greater condemnation: and moreover, by trusting to their own judgment, they interpret the word in a perverse sense, and thus also lose what they seem to have. Nic. de Lyra.—Let those who talk so much about Scripture, and interpret it according to their own private spirit or fancy, see lest this also attach to them.
Hymn

A Call To Christians Lyrics

1. A light within the world
Yes, witnesses are we,
To bear the light of Christ
For all the world to see

Refrain:
We come with you, O Christ
In answer to Your Call;
Through love we give All.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

2. Your love and light, O Lord,
You send us to impart
To those who know You not
Yet love You in their heart.

3. Have mercy on the world
That sin and stife may cease;
Extend your reign, O Christ,
You are the King of Peace.

St Timothy And Titus

Posted: January 26, 2012 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys, Memory Book

Memorial of Sts. Timothy and Titus, Bishops

St Paul was so powerful and attractive a personality that he was able to draw such different types of men as Luke, Timothy, and Titus, and to make his collaborators.  Timothy was the inseparable companion of the work and sufferings of the apostle.  He was his confidant at all times.  He had received in the spontaneity of conversion, the tremendous intuitions of the Letter to the Romans, and offered Paul the warmth of his human presence when he descended from “the third heaven” (2 Col 12:2).  Far from his master when the latter was about to render his supreme witness, he received from his master the Second Letter to Timothy, which was St Paul’s spiritual testament.

Paul made both men bishops and entrusted Timothy with the care of the Christians in Ephesus. St. Timothy has been regarded by some as the “angel of the church of Ephesus”, Rev 2:1-1.  St. Paul sent Titus to Crete to look after the Christians there. He wrote them “pastoral” epistles, giving advice for pastors and people alike.

Titus was the negotiator, the one St. Paul sent to clear up misunderstandings, reconcile differences, and the one who would organize a new Church. He received a letter from St. Paul which encouraged Christians to live temperate, just, and devout lives, while awaiting the coming of Christ.

St. Timothy was stoned to death thirty years after St. Paul’s martyrdom for having denounced the worship of the goddess Diana. Tradition tells us that St. Titus died a natural death at the age of 94, having lived in the state of virginity during his whole life.

Patronage: St. Timothy is the patron saint of intestinal disorders and stomach diseases. St. Titus is the patron of Crete.

Quote: “But when the kindness and generous love of God our Savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. This saying is trustworthy” ~ Titus 3:4-8

Collect: O God, who adorned Saints Timothy and Titus with apostolic virtues, grant through the intercession of them both, that living justly and devoutly in this present age, we may merit to reach our heavenly homeland. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Embrace Me With Your Word Oh Lord

Your Word oh Lord my God, is life, love, truth and light. Your Word embraces my whole being, my body and to the depths of my soul.

In today’s Missal the following reading and Gospel are as follows :

First Reading 1 Samuel 17:32–33, 37, 40–51
Gospel Mark 3:1–6

Summary of the first reading

The battle is God’s battle.  If our confidence is purely in the power of God rather than our own sufficiency, we may be certain the world’s utmost might cannot withstand.  God resists the proud and pours contempt upon those who bid defiance to His people.

Personal Reflection

  • David found the armour provided for by Samuel burdensome, he decided to go into battle with the armour of God instead. How many of us facing our biggest, toughest problem carry all our anxiety and baggage with us? Do we lift our burdens to the Lord our God and trust in Him to help us?
  • It was common in ancient times when opponents who faced off in battle, to launch derogatory remarks, expletives, even boasts.  Goliath did just that and more, he cursed David with his gods!  David however, in piety merely uttered that our God of Hosts will cut him and his people down for their defiance and arrogance.  How many of us have the Goliath complex? Insolent, boastful, prideful, overcome with rage?  How many of us when facing such a giant in vulnerability has the faith to do as David did?
  • David’s victory over Goliath is a type of the triumph of the Son of God over Satan.  Goliath is also a remarkable type of the anti-Christ ( note 6 pieces of armour, vv. 5-7).  Just as David anointed for the kingship but not yet in power is defied by the boastful champion who he overcomes in the name of the Lord of Hosts, so too when Jesus comes as Lord of Hosts, anti-Christ will be destroyed by the brightness of His coming.

Summary Of Today’s Gospel

Those who are bound by disease and evil spirits are the special object of Jesus compassion and may find complete deliverance in Him, do they but stretch out the hand of faith toward Him.  Those are obstinate indeed in their unbelief, who set themselves against being convinced of the power of Christ by trying to explain it away, or attributing it to the devil.  All such are sinning against their last remedy.

Personal Reflection

While the summary contains many levels in itself for reflection,  I would like to highlight a point.  The Pharisees were waiting and watching to see if Jesus was going to perform an unlawful act in their opinion by healing the man with the withered hand.  They were an extremely ritualistic bunch bent on following the law to the latter.  Horses with blinds so to speak!

How many of us have fallen into meaningless rituals? Do the rituals we perform bring us closer to God? Do they bring joy into our lives and the lives of others? Do they allow us to share the Good News? Morning and evening prayers, attending Mass are just a few examples of the rituals in our lives, are they done with life, vigour, spirit filled?

Let us liveth in Christ as Christ liveth in us…..Amen!

     The Eucharistic Celebration which is the source and summit of our Faith is in essence a thanksgiving Mass.  In order to fully embrace the celebration, we need to bear in mind the following reasons for our attendance. The acronym ACTS commonly used to remember the four dimensions of prayer,  helps us to remember the very same thing….

Adoration – To adore our one Triune God
Contrition – To ask pardon for our sins
Thanksgiving – To thank Him for His many gifts and to praise Him
Supplication – To plead for what we need.

With this understanding and preparation we can be led into an interior union with Christ enabling us to actively participate in the Liturgical Celebration.

More on ACTS..

Adoration is the first act of the virtue of religion. To acknowledge the creator and the immeasurable gifts of creation.  It is our destiny and highest joy, to worship, and to kneel before Him. Adoration is at the very heart of the spiritual life. In the Book of Revelation, Chapter 4, the 24 elders prostrate themselves before the throne of God, cast the honor of their golden crowns before him, and sing, “Holy, holy, holy. You are worthy, O Lord.” No one else is truly holy; no one else is worthy, worth it, worth all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. All sin and misery come of forgetting this truth, and going after the worship of false gods, whether these are corruptions of real religion, or mere creatures like sex, money, and power.

Contrition is the awareness and expression that we are weak and flawed in the presence of the Holy One. We make mistakes; we fail; we fall. God loved us before we existed and knows all our faults. God is merciful. God forgives no matter how many times we fail. Once we recognise this fact then we should look forward often, to receive absolution through the loving Sacrament of reconciliation for our mortal sins as well as accumulated venial ones.

Thanksgiving – we thank God by always remembering Him. Remembering Him means that He is a part of our thoughts, words, and deeds. To give thanksgiving unto God we must recognize His hand in our lives. The many blessings, gifts and talents we receive from Him.  Thanksgiving is joyous praise of God. When we can thank God for everything, good or bad, we become truly happy people.  Through expression of prayerful gratitude and thanksgiving, we show our dependence upon a higher source of wisdom and knowledge.

Supplication  simply means — petition. We ask God for what we need.  Most prayers are for asking while others are for listening to do His Will. The Our Father is a list of petitions, from “hallowed be thy name” to “deliver us from evil.”  Jesus has encouraged us, “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Mt 7:7).

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God. PS 42:11

Serve the LORD your God joyfully and with gladness of heart for the abundance of everything. Deut 28:47

“The Joy of the Lord is my strength”. (Nehemiah 8:10)

Honor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place. 1 Chro 16:27

I know, O my God, that you put hearts to the test and that you take pleasure in uprightness. With a sincere heart I have willingly given all these things, and now with joy I have seen your people here present also giving to you generous.  1 Chro 29:17

Acknowledge the Lord, for he is good, and bless the King of the ages,so that his tent may be rebuilt in you in joy. May he cheer all those within you who are captives,and love all those within you who are distressed,to all generations forever. Tob 13:10

He will yet fill your mouth with laughter,and your lips with shouts of joy Job 8:21

You have turned my mourning into dancing;you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy. Ps 30:11

Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous,and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.Ps 32:11

Look to God that you may be radiant with joy and your faces may not blush for shame Ps 34:6

James 1:2: “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of our faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”

John 15:10-11 “If you keep my commandments you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, ‘that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full’.”

 Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee

Poem Written By Henry Van Dyke 1907

Sung to the tune of “Ode to Joy” melody of the final movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s final symphony, Symphony No. 9

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,
God of glory, God of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee,
Opening to their sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround Thee,
Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee,
Center of unbroken praise:
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Flowering meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain,
Call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Well-spring of the joy of living,
Ocean-depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, —
All who live in love are Thine:
Teach us how to love each other,
Lift us to the Joy Divine.

Mortals join the mighty chorus,
Which the morning stars began;
Father-love is reigning o’er us,
Brother-love binds man to man.
Ever singing march we onward,
Victors in the midst of strife;
Joyful music lifts us sunward
In the triumph song of life.

Of Scribes And Pharisees….

Posted: January 15, 2012 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys, Personal Thoughts & Reflections

Have you ever been accused of being a Scribe or a Pharisee? Were they all a bad bunch? Actually the Scribes were the doctors of the law of Moses; the Pharisees were a precise set of men, making profession of a more exact observance of the law: and upon that account greatly esteemed among the people.

The Pharisees or Perusim, (separatists) constituted the largest Jewish party following the return from the Babylonian captivity. They strongly embraced the concept of separatism from the non-Jewish people because of their superiority as God’s chosen people. The Pharisees were the “Puritans” of their time (Talmage, “Jesus the Christ, “pg. 66). They strongly held to the observance of the Oral Law as well as the Torah (the written law). “They attempted to direct their activities to the masses whom they sought to influence according to the traditional doctrines.” (Cecil Roth, The Concise Jewish Encyclopedia [New York City: New American Library, 1980], pg. 424)

The basic tenets of their beliefs were:

Pre-existence of Spirits
The reality of reward and punishment
The necessity for individual self-denial
The immortality of the soul
Resurrection of the dead
These Jewish beliefs were mostly abandoned as Christianity embraced them as fundamental tenets. “The Pharisee tradition became the norm for later [current] Rabbinic Judaism.” (Roth, pg. 424)

Perhaps it can be said the Pharisees often missed the mark completely because their blinds only enabled them to see the law but not the spirit of the law. Because in essence all laws are born out of love, hence it might be further said that they loved the laws but did not experience the love behind the laws.

Today we often see some leaders in our Church either adopting the role of  OT Pharisee or even that of a New age ‘Pharisee’ liberalising it’s laws and professing that only the Spirit of the law is more important.  What did Jesus have to say about this?  Let us see….

In Matthew 5:17-21 He says…

17 “Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. 18 For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. 19 Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Be it a gentle love or be it a tough love the message is quite clear, for the Love of God, Love with all your heart, your mind and your soul.

Matthew 5:43-47

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Have We Lost The Ark?

Posted: January 13, 2012 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys

Yesterdays reading is rather intriguing and today I still find myself pondering over it.

1 Samuel 4:1~11

In summary the Israelites lost their battles against the Philistines. In their second battle they brought the Ark of the covenant with them and lost it to the Philistines in terrible defeat.

Reflection
~~~~~~~~
Why did the sons of ElI, priests think they could take God likely, blaspheme against Him and yet go unpunished?
How many of us are doing that today,whether it be in the Eucharistic celebration or in our day to day lives, by our reverence for God our Father, our words and deeds?
How could they think that God would be with them in battle just because they brought the Ark of the covenant with them? Especially since they were unrepentant nor were they contrite in their offerings?
How many of us are aware that like the Ark we are living tabernacles when we receive Jesus. But have we really received Jesus when we are not holy? Not contrite? Taking God likely? Is God truly with us?
Let us always be mindful of God our Father’s love for us and may we never take Him for granted. May we always strive to do His Will. Amen
1 Samuel 3:1–10, 19–20
Can one have a favourite scripture passage? For me, this one comes close especially when the old can be seen in the light of the new.
In this old testament passages, we see God’s calling for Samuel and of His (God’s) Justice, Goodness, Faithfulness to come.  We hear a certain urgency when God calls his name twice the fourth time. 1 Sam 3:10 ( see Gen 22:11) (Luke 22:31)
Reflection
  • How many times have the Lord the called us but we were not listening?
  • Are our ears opened but only to hear the call of the world?
  • Or have we answered Yes Lord! But have not truly listened with our heart and opened our eyes in Faith?
  • Have we heard God’s calling for us? His Will for us? Or have we acted on our own perhaps even preaching but not practising what we preach?
  • Have we stayed back at the end of the Eucharistic Celebration to thank Him and have Him speak to us?
Have we truly declared in humility and meekness “Here I am Lord! I have heard your calling and am here to do your Will!”
or have we? Allowed ourselves to preach and do good works for our own glory? Not according to His Will for His Kingdom and Glory??
Matt 7:21-23
21 “Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.’ ( Greek translation Anomian from the word anomia Lawlessness (not God’s Law) )
In today’s first reading 1 Samuel 1:9–20 we read about how distraught Hannah was on being barren. And how she was transformed through her deep heartfelt prayer to God.( 1 Sam 1:13 Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard) When she left the doorpost of the temple she was no longer sad as she had lifted her burdens up to the Lord. She trusted in Him to answer Her prayer and He did.
Reflection
God answers all our prayers even if the answer is sometimes no. When we fully place our trust in Him, His grace will come upon us and we will experience His peace and love. Prayer leads us closer to God and to the sacraments whereby we experience Him not emotionally or vicariously but by His real presence.
Praise Be To God! Alleluia!
“O Woman, What Have You To Do With Me?”
Posted: January 7, 2012 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys, Memory Book
John 2:4
4 And Jesus said to her, And Jesus saith to her: Woman, what is that to me and to thee? My hour is not yet come.” Douay-Rheims
The manner of uttering them, likely, most tender, the tone of voice, would remove all appearance of acerbity.
The word, “woman,” (γυναι) is frequently used as a term of respect, signifying Mistress, Lady, as appears from its use, in this sense, by Pagan authors. (Xenophon, Cyroped, vii. 3, 4; Homer, Odyss. 221, 555, etc.) Even the most respectable Protestant commentators are in accord with us, on this point. Our Lord himself, who loved his beloved Mother with such filial tenderness, addresses the term to her, on the most affecting occasion, when hanging on the cross, on the point of breathing His last, on taking His final farewell, He says, in the presence of His beloved disciple, John, “WOMAN, behold thy Son” (John 19:26).
The phrase, τι μοι και σοὶ—“Quid mihi et tibi,” literally translated, would be, “what to me and to thee?” leaving the verb, “is,” out altogether. Hence, the words are not faithfully rendered, either in the Douay or Authorized Version. It might have been better to translate the words literally from the Greek, without adding or taking away from them; and then, leave the meaning to be determined, from either the context or any other available source of interpretation. The phrase is sometimes used in the Old Testament as well as in the New. The instances being so well known, it is unnecessary to quote them here at any length. In no one instance, can it be shown that they convey censure or reproof of any kind.
Our Daily Work Is To Do The Will Of God
From a conference to her spiritual daughters by Elizabeth Ann Seton
I will tell you what is my own great help. I once read or heard that an interior life means but the continuation of our Savior’s life in us; that the great object of all his mysteries is to merit for us the grace of his interior life and communicate it to us, it being the end of his mission to lead us into the sweet land of promise, a life of constant union with himself. And what was the first rule of our dear Savior’s life? You know it was to do his Father’s will. Well, then, the first end I propose in our daily work is to do the will of God; secondly, to do it in the manner he wills; and thirdly, to do it because it is his will.
I know what his will is by those who direct me; whatever they bid me do, if it is ever so small in itself, is the will of God for me. Then do it in the manner he wills it, not sewing an old thing as if it were new, or a new thing as if it were old; not fretting because the oven is too hot, or in a fuss because it is too cold. You understand — not flying and driving because you are hurried, not creeping like a snail because no one pushes you. Our dear Savior was never in extremes. The third object is to do his will because God wills it, that is, to be ready to quit at any moment and to do anything else to which you may be called….
You think it very hard to lead a life of such restraint unless you keep your eye of faith always open. Perseverance is a great grace. To go on gaining and advancing every day, we must be resolute, and bear and suffer as our blessed forerunners did. Which of them gained heaven without a struggle?…
What are our real trials? By what name shall we call them? One cuts herself out a cross of pride; another, one of causeless discontent; another, one of restless impatience or peevish fretfulness. But is the whole any better than children’s play if looked at with the common eye of faith? Yet we know certainly that our God calls us to a holy life, that he gives us every grace, every abundant grace; and though we are so weak of ourselves, this grace is able to carry us through every obstacle and difficulty.
But we lack courage to keep a continual watch over nature, and therefore, year after year, with our thousand graces, multiplied resolutions, and fair promises, we run around in a circle of misery and imperfections. After a long time in the service of God, we come nearly to the point from whence we set out, and perhaps with even less ardor for penance and mortification than when we began our consecration to him.
You are now in your first setout. Be above the vain fears of nature and efforts of your enemy. You are children of eternity. Your immortal crown awaits you, and the best of Fathers waits there to reward your duty and love. You may indeed sow here in tears, but you may be sure there to reap in joy.
I AM GREAT I AM
Posted: December 22, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys, Personal Thoughts & Reflections
How do you help someone enter into a relationship with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit? That is the question that has plagued me for many months? Am I the only one trying to help?, obviously not! The message of how to, is out there in homilies, books, Church fellowship talks, bible sharing, blogs, its practically everywhere.  But why are most people not listening? Do they not care for entering into a relationship with God?
Although this may be an over simplification, I believe the answer is a two fold one.  One, they have not fully surrendered their lives to God and two, they are holding on to their addictions, hurts, un-forgiveness or sins.
In both instances ‘I’ am in charge of my destiny, ‘I’ love my way of life it is all ‘I’ know! ‘I’ will continue to live this way, don’t try to teach ‘me’.  ‘I’ go to Church every Sunday and ‘I’ go for the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year.  God knows what is in ‘my’ heart.  Or one day when I can muster enough strength I will change and come back to the Lord.  Why then do you not experience inner peace and constant happiness?  Why do you feel unfulfilled? Why is your life filled with anger and resentment?  Why do you constantly feel guilty? Why do you feel like you’re in quicksand half the time? Why does it seem your life is going in circles?
Ours is a loving God and His love endures for ever ( Psalm 136 ) God is love (1 John 4:8; 1 John 4:16) ; the God of love and peace (2 Cor 13:11); love is from God (1 John 4:7); he will be silent in His love (Zeph 3:17) In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us ( 1 John 4:10) For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) He came for sinners ( Matt 9:10 )
Why then be afraid to surrender to the Lord our God? Why do we say “They Kingdom come, thy Will be done” If we do not mean it?  Surrendering to Him does not mean we become mindless or risk being puppets with no control of our limbs, it simply means we invite God our Father to minister to us, to love us and to pour His graces upon us.  To allow Him to do this we need to empty ourselves. He must increase  but I must decrease (John 3:26 ) And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work (2 Cor 9:8)
Jesus came to draw sinners to himself (Luke 15:1) So why wait? He loves us and says there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. (Luke 15:7) Hence let Him transform us and He will do so, so long as we desire it with a contrite heart.  He will show us the way….He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. (Philipians 3:21)
We therefore have a choice to make if want to enter into a relationship with God our Father.  Are we continuing to say I am Great as I am! Or do we bow down before the Great I AM and praise Him for His goodness?
On Iglesia Ni Cristo….
Posted: December 17, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys, Memory Book
The Iglesia ni Cristo (Tagalog, “Church of Christ”) claims to be the true Church established by Christ. Felix Manalo, its founder, proclaimed himself God’s prophet. Many tiny sects today claim to be the true Church, and many individuals claim to be God’s prophet. What makes Iglesia ni Cristo different is that it is not as tiny as others.
Since it was founded in the Philippines in 1914, it has grown to more than two hundred congregations in sixty-seven countries outside the Philippines, including an expanding United States contingent. The Iglesia keeps the exact number of members secret, but it is estimated to be between three million and ten million worldwide. It is larger than the Jehovah’s Witnesses, a better known sect (which also claims to be Christ’s true Church). Iglesia is not better known, despite its numbers, because the majority of Iglesia’s members are Filipino. Virtually the only exceptions are a few non-Filipinos who have married into Iglesia families.
The organization publishes two magazines, Pasugo and God’s Message, which devote most of their energies toward condemning other Christian churches, especially the Catholic Church. The majority of the Iglesia’s members are ex-Catholics. The Philippines is the only dominantly Catholic nation in the Far East, with eighty-four percent of its population belonging to the Church. Since this is its largest potential source of converts, Iglesia relies on anti-Catholic scare tactics as support for its own doctrines, which cannot withstand biblical scrutiny. The Iglesia tries to convince people of its doctrines not by proving they are right, but by attempting to prove the Catholic Church’s teachings are wrong.
Is Christ God?
The Catholic teaching that most draws Iglesia’s fire is Christ’s divinity. Like the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Iglesia claims that Jesus Christ is not God but a created being.
Yet the Bible is clear: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). We know Jesus is the Word because John 1:14 tells us, “The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” God the Father was not made flesh; it was Jesus, as even Iglesia admits. Jesus is the Word, the Word is God, therefore Jesus is God. Simple, yet Iglesia won’t accept it.
In Deuteronomy 10:17 and 1 Timothy 6:15, God the Father is called the “Lord of lords,” yet in other New Testament passages this divine title is applied directly to Jesus. In Revelation 17:14 we read, “They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings.” And in Revelation 19:13–16, John sees Jesus “clad in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. . . . On his thigh he has a name inscribed, King of kings and Lord of lords.”
The fact that Jesus is God is indicated in numerous places in the New Testament. John 5:18 states that Jewish leaders sought to kill Jesus “because he not only broke the Sabbath but also called God his Father, making himself equal with God.” Paul also states that Jesus was equal with God (Phil. 2:6). But if Jesus is equal with the Father, and the Father is a God, then Jesus is a God. Since there is only one God, Jesus and the Father must both be one God—one God in at least two persons (the Holy Spirit, of course, is the third person of the Trinity).
The same is shown in John 8:56–59, where Jesus directly claims to be Yahweh (“I AM”). “‘Your father Abraham rejoiced that he was to see my day; he saw it and was glad.’ The Jews then said to him, ‘You are not yet fifty years old, and you have seen Abraham?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.’ So they took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.” Jesus’ audience understood exactly what he was claiming; that is why they picked up rocks to stone him. They considered him to be b.aspheming God by claiming to be Yahweh.
The same truth is emphasized elsewhere. Paul stated that we are to live “awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). And Peter addressed his second epistle to “those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours in the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Pet. 1:1).
Jesus is shown to be God most dramatically when Thomas, finally convinced that Jesus has risen, falls down and exclaims, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)—an event many in Iglesia have difficulty dealing with. When confronted with this passage in a debate with Catholic Answers founder Karl Keating, Iglesia apologist Jose Ventilacion replied with a straight face, “Thomas was wrong.”
God’s Messenger?
A litmus test for any religious group is the credibility of its founder in making his claims. Felix Manalo’s credibility and, consequently, his claims, are impossible to take seriously. He claimed to be “God’s messenger,” divinely chosen to re-establish the true Church which, according to Manalo, disappeared in the first century due to apostasy. It was his role to restore numerous doctrines that the Church had abandoned. A quick look at Manalo’s background shows where these doctrines came from: Manalo stole them from other quasi-Christian religious sects.
Manalo was baptized a Catholic, but he left the Church as a teen. He became a Protestant, going through five different denominations, including the Seventh-Day Adventists. Finally, Manalo started his own church in 1914. In 1919, he left the Philippines because he wanted to learn more about religion. He came to America, to study with Protestants, whom Iglesia would later declare to be apostates, just like Catholics. Why, five years after being called by God to be his “last messenger,” did Manalo go to the U.S. to learn from apostates? What could God’s messenger learn from a group that, according to Iglesia, had departed from the true faith?
The explanation is that, contrary to his later claims, Manalo did not believe himself to be God’s final messenger in 1914. He didn’t use the last messenger doctrine until 1922. He appears to have adopted the messenger doctrine in response to a schism in the Iglesia movement. The schism was led by Teogilo Ora, one of its early ministers. Manalo appears to have developed the messenger doctrine to accumulate power and re-assert his leadership in the church.
This poses a problem for Iglesia, because if Manalo had been the new messenger called by God in 1914, why didn’t he tell anybody prior to 1922? Because he didn’t think of it until 1922. His situation in this respect parallels that of Mormonism’s founder Joseph Smith, who claimed that when he was a boy, God appeared to him in a vision and told him all existing churches were corrupt and he was not to join them, that he would lead a movement to restore God’s true Church. But historical records show that Smith did join an inquirer’s class at an established Protestant church after his supposed vision from God. It was only in later years that Smith came up with his version of the “true messenger” doctrine, proving as much of an embarrassment for the Mormon church as Manalo’s similar doctrine does for Iglesia.
Iglesia Prophesied?
A pillar of Iglesia belief is that its emergence in the Philippines was prophesied in the Bible. This idea is supposedly found in Isaiah 43:5–6, which states, “Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, ‘Give up,’ and the south, ‘Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth.’”
Iglesia argues that in this verse, Isaiah is referring to the “far east” and that this is the place where the “Church of Christ” will emerge in the last days. This point is constantly repeated in Iglesia literature: “The prophecy stated that God’s children shall come from the far east” (Pasugo, March 1975, 6).
But the phrase “far east” is not in the text. In fact, in the Tagalog (Filipino) translation, as well as in the original Hebrew, the words “far” and “east” are not even found in the same verse, yet the Iglesia recklessly combine the two verses to translate “far east.” Using this fallacious technique, Iglesia claims that the far east refers to the Philippines.
Iglesia is so determined to convince its followers of this “fact” that it quotes Isaiah 43:5 from an inexact paraphrase by Protestant Bible scholar James Moffatt that reads, “From the far east will I bring your offspring.” Citing this mistranslation, one Iglesia work states, “Is it not clear that you can read the words ‘far east’? Clear! Why does not the Tagalog Bible show them? That is not our fault, but that of those who translated the Tagalog Bible from English—the Catholics and Protestants” (Isang Pagbubunyag Sa Iglesia ni Cristo, 1964:131). The Iglesia accuses everyone else of mistranslating the Bible, when it is Iglesia that is taking liberties with the original language.
The Name Game
Iglesia points to its name as proof it is the true Church. They argue, “What is the name of Christ’s Church, as given in the Bible? It is the ‘Church of Christ.’ Our church is called the ‘Church of Christ.’ Therefore, ours is the Church Christ founded.”
Whether or not the exact words “Church of Christ” appear in the Bible is irrelevant, but since Iglesia makes it an issue, it is important to note that the phrase “Church of Christ” never once appears in the Bible.
The verse Iglesia most often quotes on this issue is Romans 16:16: “Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you ” (Pasugo, November 1973, 6). But the phrase in this verse is “churches of Christ.” And it’s not a technical name. Paul is referring to a collection of local churches, not giving an organizational name.
To get further “proof” of its name, Iglesia cites Acts 20:28: “Take heed therefore . . . to feed the church of Christ which he has purchased with his blood” (Lamsa translation; cited in Pasugo, April 1978). But the Lamsa translation is not based on the original Greek, the language in which the book of Acts was written. In Greek, the phrase is “the church of God” (tan ekklasian tou Theou) not “the church of Christ” (tan ekklasian tou Christou). Iglesia knows this, yet it continues to mislead its members.
Even if the phrase “church of Christ” did appear in the Bible, it would not help Iglesia’s case. Before Manalo started his church, there were already groups calling themselves “the Church of Christ.” There are several Protestant denominations that call themselves Church of Christ and use exactly the same argument. Of course, they aren’t the true Church for the same reason Iglesia isn’t—because they were not founded by Christ.
 Did Christ’s Church Apostatize?
The doctrines upon which all Iglesia’s other doctrines depend is its teaching that Christ’s Church apostatized in the early centuries. Like Mormonism, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and other fringe groups, Iglesia asserts that the early Christian Church suffered a total apostasy. It believes in “the complete disappearance of the first-century Church of Christ and the emergence of the Catholic Church” (Pasugo, July-Aug. 1979, 8).
But Jesus promised that his Church would never apostatize. He told Peter, “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:18). If his Church had apostatized, then the gates of hell would have prevailed against it, making Christ a liar.
In other passages, Christ teaches the same truth. In Matthew 28:20 he said, “I am with you always even until the end of the world.” And in John 14:16, 18 he said, “And I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever … I will not leave you desolate.”
If Iglesia members accept the apostasy doctrine, they make Christ a liar. Since they believe Jesus Christ is not a liar, they are ignoring what Christ promised, and their doctrine contradicts Scripture.
They are, however, fulfilling Scripture. While Jesus taught that his Church would never apostatize, the Bible does teach that there will be a great apostasy, or falling away from the Church. Paul prophesies: “[Do not] be quickly shaken in mind or excited . . . to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come, unless the rebellion [Greek: apostasia] comes first” (2 Thess. 2:2–3); “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons” (1 Tim. 4:1); and, “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own liking, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths” (2 Tim. 4:3–4). By falling away from the Church, members of Iglesia are committing precisely the kind of apostasy of which they accuse the Catholic Church.
The Bible tells us in 1 John 4:1: “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” Was Felix Manalo a true prophet? Is his church the “true Church?” If we test the claims of Iglesia ni Cristo, the answer is apparent. His total apostasy doctrine is in flat contradiction to Christ’s teaching. There is no way that Iglesia ni Cristo can be the true Church of Christ.
An Advent Reflection
Posted: December 15, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys
For now your creator will be your husband, his name, the Lord Sabaoth; your redeemer will be the Holy One of Israel, he is called the God of the whole earth. (Is 54:5)
The tangled covenant love story of God and His people will be brought at last to fulfillment in the wedding feast of the Lamb, the unbreakable communion of divinity and humanity in the one body of Christ. Our Advent hope stands on tiptoe, searching the horizon for that glorious day.
A Little On The Word Of God…
Posted: November 28, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys
As I journey on in faith, I’ve come to have a deeper love and appreciation for the Word of God. When I look back now, I think how foolish I was to believe that Catholics do not really have to read scripture, after all it is read to us in the Eucharistic Celebration on Sundays and more often then not it is explained to us as well. Oh I have better and more important things to do, besides even if I wanted to …where would I begin? Also how will I even understand what I am reading, it is just too hard sometimes.
Then there were the invitations for bible sharing or breaking of the Word…..BIBLE SHARING?! You’ve got to be kidding! How am I to share anything when I have a hard time understanding it myself? Or I’d look stupid or may say something that is wrong or contrary to the teachings of the Church.
With God’s grace and the guidance of the Holy Spirit….
This is what I have learnt so far……
  • Never approach or read the Bible like you would a storybook, magazine, history book etc. You can of course do it that way and get very little or nothing out of it. It is the Word of God! The Logos…
  • Always say a prayer before reading the Word of God. A simple prayer from the heart would suffice. Example: “Heavenly Father we pray that you send forth your Holy Spirit to guide and teach us. Open our hearts and minds to your Word so that we may learn to do Your will always.”
  • The Word of God speaks to each and everyone of us in different ways, even at different levels. The Word itself is One though it often consists of many parts. The same scripture passage you read at one time of your life and had one meaning for you, could have a totally new meaning for you this very day. So in a group setting…..if something, a passage or a word strikes you then don’t be afraid to share. It may be something new which the group did not see or experience and even if it is not new to them, then the Holy Spirit could have led you to open your own eyes for the very first time or to remind the rest of your group members whom might have forgotten.
  • The Word of God is a living Word, it is always made new or present in a new light. It is life giving, it nurtures and it allows us to grow in faith and love. Even the brightest and most learned have been baffled and humbled by the wisdom shared by the least of their brethren through the council of the Holy Spirit.
  • We are the clay in the potter’s hands, if we allow ourselves to be moulded then God will transform us through His Word. God our Father fills our cup till it runs over. But how can He fill our cup if it is already full? Full of what we think is best, our time, our hearts, our minds, our way of thinking, even our own interpretations of His Word.
Jesus our Lord and Saviour is the Word incarnate, what does this truly mean for us? Ponder deeply and reflect on this…… He is the Risen Lord who saves! Again I say to you that the Word of God is a living Word, it gives life, love, hope and so much more than can be articulated in human terms. The Word of God is only complete in us when we live it.
Love This Song On Prayer!….
I Get What I Need
I knew all the answers
The way my life should go
And when I used to say my prayers
I would tell God so
It seemed He wasn’t listening
I thought He didn’t care
But lookin’ back
It’s plain to see
He was always there
I prayed for strength
And I got pain that made me strong
I prayed for courage
And got fear to overcome
When I prayed for faith
My empty heart brought me to my knees
I don’t always get what I want
I get what I need
I’m not sayin’ that it’s easy
Or that it doesn’t hurt
When nothing seems to go my way
Nothing seems to work
These days I’m getting better
At goin’ with the flow
Accepting that sometimes the answer
To a prayer is no
‘Cause I prayed for strength
And I got pain that made me strong
I prayed for courage
And got fear to overcome
When I prayed for faith
My empty heart brought me to my knees
I don’t always get what I want
I get what I need
Every time I’ve had a door slammed in my face
In time a better one was opened in its place
I prayed for strength
And I got pain that made me strong
I prayed for courage
And got fear to overcome
When I prayed for faith
My empty heart brought me to my knees
I don’t always get what I want
I get what I need
Oh I don’t always get what I want
I get what I need
Feed My Sheep, Feed My Lambs And Lead Them Not Astray
Posted: November 18, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys
This is quite a strong message I received this week during a praise and worship session. In fact, I heard the first part of it that is “Feed my sheep” a few days earlier while in prayer. The rest was revealed in the session……but what does it mean? Of course the starting text can be found in Scripture in John 21:15-17 when Jesus was speaking to Peter. It is a powerful message indeed, because Jesus is preparing Peter for what is to come and how his leadership will be transformed to what is required of him to truly lead His flock.
Hence the message received, I believe is addressing leadership flaws which directly or indirectly leads the people astray. So what are some of these flaws? Well let us examine two of them…..
I AM IN TOTAL CONTROL
A leader who thinks he/she is in total control of everything often uses lots of ‘I’ in his/her interactions with others. ‘I’ did this….’I’ did that…In ‘my’ experience… So from time to time when he/she says things like “Don’t need to thank me, all glory be to God” naturally people question his/her sincerity.
When there is a project or program to run, she/he often breezes past her/his group members suggestions. She/He needs to assert order and discipline and members speak only when called upon. Often times through her/his discernment, she/he will introduce a workable idea for the group forgetting that one of her/his group members had suggested the very same ‘workable idea’ some time before. She/He chalks it up to being an affirmation by the Holy Spirit. Hence most new ideas are not helpful and frowned upon until such time they are.
He/she often panics when things do not flow according to plan so it is not surprising that he/she will blame the devil for it. Until such time this sort of leader learns that God is and always will be in control he/she will have made little impact in building God’s kingdom and may directly or indirectly cause His flock to disperse.
One Law to Rule Them All
Leaders with this mindset are often resistant to change not very unlike the Pharisees and Sadducees of Our Lord’s time. What is alarming though is that these leaders of today take on the guise of conformity, stating that we should always be obedient unto our Pope/Bishop/Parish priest. They can often be seen however, complaining or grumbling about any changes one way or another. Where in Scripture does it allow for this?? Which other diocese or where else in the world is this done this way??? If there is a change, then it must be gradual and must allow enough time for all to adjust to any changes especially for older parishioners otherwise we might alienate them from the faith. One standard must be set for ALL otherwise we will be seen as having double standards. And when questioned why some of the laws do not seem to apply to them, they readily quote that it is the Spirit of the Law that truly counts not so much the law in itself, besides……there is always a besides…do they not even realise that they are again directly or indirectly leading the flock astray?
The Key
Our faith is full of paradoxes, one such strong message from Jesus was “And he among you who wants to be the first will be a servant to all.” Mark 10:44 hence a true leader must totally empty himself/herself so that he/she can be filled with Christ in order to serve. The key to everything is Love! Love completes everything…..I leave you with two parts of 1 Corinthians 13 to reflect upon.
4-7 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
9-10 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your selves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Matt 11:28-30
We hear this in scripture and we think to ourselves, how nice it is if Jesus was speaking directly to us. Well he is still communicating this message to us this very day. He loves us and wants to teach us how to build a long lasting relationship with him filled with peace and joy. And He has chosen to share this with us today through His servant Brother Lalith Perera and his team in four easy steps.
By God’s Grace and with tremendous support from Father Augustine Joseph of Church Our Lady of Lourdes, we embarked on this spiritual journey on 5th November 1330hrs. For most, the eyes of their heart were opened for the very first time and they experienced the awesome redemptive love of our God through Jesus Christ His son. For others it was a renewal and an awakening to new insights by the Holy Spirit. Lives were transformed one way or another.
By the end of Day 2, on 6th November the Fire of the Holy Spirit was burning brightly in our hearts. Inner healing had taken place for some, while others experienced physical healing. But all felt the love of Jesus Christ moving through their very being. Many rested in the Spirit for the first time, when they received the anointing through Brother Lalith, his wife and an elder team member. It was uplifting to see so many smiling faces as they experience the joy and peace of the Lord. Their burdens were liberated!
Here are my additional thoughts on the retreat after attending it for the second time. In the Bible we see how God had chosen many great men to lead or prophesy to His people. Jonah, Jeremiah, Moses, David to name a few and then in the New Testament we have the Apostles. They all however have something peculiar and yet in common and that is they were all not the cream of the crop or the crème de la crème among men. Among them we see a variety of different imperfections at the time of their calling or even after they were called, some self perceived in the sense that they felt unworthy or inadequate, while others self evident. These included mental hang-ups, stubbornness, pridefulness, one or two stuttered, youthful and immature, sinful, uneducated, foul tempered etc. Yet even in their brokenness and imperfections God loved them, instructed them, transformed and allowed them to serve Him and His people in a perfect way. It is indeed a wonder that to this very day God is doing the same thing and Brother Lalith is one such servant.
Through him God communicates His love for us, providing us with a tangible experience not just a thought or a feeling. He teaches how we should continue to behave as His children and how we can ‘meet’ with Him all the days of our lives here on earth.
The four steps retreat program Is God’s gift to us, so when will you be claiming it? Jesus is calling you to come as you are, he loves you.
Is God Real_ly In Your Life?
Ever since I encountered the one triune God in my life and developed an ongoing relationship with Him, I have been on a ‘crusade’ so to speak, to bring others into faith.  What inner peace! What indescribable joy! Glory to God on high!
Why can’t you just keep it to yourself you may ask? Why do you feel the need to try and convert everyone else?  Well that is the beauty of God’s love, it is unselfish and it ends not in itself.  It is abundant, overflowing and cannot be contained! And I am not trying to convert anyone, I couldn’t even if I wanted to.  It is only by God’s grace that one can be converted, I am merely sharing the Good News of God’s love and what abundant gifts one can hope to receive.
So if it is so great and so abundant as you say then why do you need to share it? Isn’t it given freely to all? Well Yes and No….No in the sense that God does not force His love for us, on us.  If we choose to live out our lives without Him then He allows us to do so, even if it means living it out with emptiness.  That is what free will is about and why people often find unfulfillment in their lives no matter how much they strive for wealth, health and happiness.  They are looking for Love in all the wrong places! I know because I have been there….and so by sharing God’s love with others through my own experience, I hope to steer them in the right direction that is to experience God’s love all in all.
Whom exactly are you trying to reach? Do you have a target audience? Well initially I was thinking of reaching out to Sunday or lapse Catholics.  But now I hope to reach out to anybody who will listen. Especially those who want to change their lives around, they want to stop going around in circles heading nowhere.  Those who are tired of living out their lives in fear or in anger.  Struggling to breathe in the hustle and bustle of their daily lives. Tired of the shouting, the screaming the violence all around.
Let’s begin with two most important questions, is God real in your life? And is He really in your life?
For Catholics we recite the creed at least once a week, I believe in One God, maker of Heaven and Earth, of all things visible and invisible. But how many of you have actually experienced God? How many can say with certainty that I believe wholeheartedly that God loves me and will provide for me? That He loved me so much He came down physically to love me in Jesus Christ? He loves me so much that He counsels me and shows me the way, the truth and the light by His Holy Spirit?
Or do you have this believe that all religions are the same in that we worship one God but through different avenues? How then can so many billions of Christians around the globe over the centuries have gotten it soooo wrong? How is it that our faith can be traced back 2000++ years with documentation of all the events of Christ, His ministry and miracles and documented not just by Christians but Jews, Romans, Greeks and traders of other ethnicity of that time.  All bearing witness to the Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour?
If you say you do believe in the One true triune God then ask yourselves these questions….Why can’t you experience Him in your lives? Have you humbly prayed to God for guidance? Have you emptied yourself of the world to listen to Him? Are your lives filled with sin that you have not repented causing your vision and hearing to be impaired?
How do we know that God is really in our lives?  Well when we have Him constantly in our thoughts, words and deeds.  We fear Him not because of His ‘wrath’ but because we fear offending (‘hurting’) Him whom we love. We listen to and live out his Word for us in the scriptures. We love His children not because they merit our love. We aim to do His will in our daily lives. We long to participate in the heavenly banquet and receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.  We have constant peace and love in our lives. These are just some of the ways we know for sure but perhaps some may relate better to what it is like not to have God in our lives……
Well for one, we always want more, we desire more, hunger for more, we have insatiable appetites for practically everything be it money, love, sex, porn, drugs, alcohol, parties, entertainment, television shows, movies, self glorification, foul language and jokes etc. We have these motto that we live in a ‘dog eat dog world’ and survival is ONLY for the fittest. We attend mass out of obligation, dress however way we like, find fault with others in the congregation, half listen to the Word being proclaimed, cannot wait to leave so we do, immediately after receiving ‘communion.’ Then on our way out, we quarrel with anyone in our way.
I pray that after reading this, it may enkindle a desire in you to know God and to build  a relationship with Him. To continually experience His love for you in your daily lives.  As for those of you already experiencing God’s love in your lives, may the fire burning within never wane and may it grow bigger and brighter and engulf all in His love.  Jesus loves you and I love you too!
May God bless each and every one of you.  Amen.
Our Facebook Prayer
Posted: October 22, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys, Prayers
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the many gifts you have bestowed upon us including the gift of facebook. Guide us to use this gift for your glory, to build your kingdom through love and charity for one another. Grant us your divine Grace, so that we will not abuse and misuse this gift. Bless all our family and friends connected through facebook. We us this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
I realise that a book or two could be written about solely about Holy  Communion that is, both the Holy Eucharist and the Body of Christ.  The Love story of God and man from the beginning of time and throughout salvation history.  I have pondered all these in my heart and mind you these should be pondered upon regularly not just once in a long while, but perhaps at least every Sunday.    I am constantly filled with awe and intrigue as day by day a little more is revealed through Love, Faith, Charity and Grace.
A little while back as I finally entered into a personal relationship with our one triune God, I began to finally understand a little of what it meant to be in communion with my sisters and brothers in Christ.  No longer was I a stranger in my own faith community either by personal choice or otherwise but I began to understand a little bit better what it means to love your neighb0ur.  No longer would my hand hair stand on ends when an acquaintance in church would address me as ‘brother.’  No longer were my hands sooo heavy nor the uncomfortable feeling overwhelming that I could not raise it in praise and worship for our awesome God.  I could finally hug my sisters and brothers in Christ with genuine love and affection.  I began to slowly see that by receiving the true body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus in the Eucharist it connected me to His Body the one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Still yet a deeper mystery to be unravelled in time….
Only today! my second time being privileged to be called to give Holy Communion to the sick, did God’s grace allow me to not only see the connection but truly experience the connection of not just giving but being in communion with.  It is truly a ‘Love Connection!’ In Love, With Love, and In Love; Through Him, With Him and In Him.
Praise be to God!
Some notes for further reflection …..
  • our human body is the temple of God and so we can only receive Him when our body, mind and soul are ‘washed clean’. i.e. to put on our wedding garment.
  • We experience God and partake in His diving nature when we are fruitful, to be fruitful is to live a righteous faithful life.  With virtue and knowledge,  knowledge with self control, self control with steadfastness, steadfastness with godliness, godliness with brotherly affection, brotherly affection with love. Never forget we ourselves were cleansed of our past sins and are still in need of cleanliness.
  • Through God’s Love
Give Glory To God…..
Posted: October 3, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys
     For our second bible sharing session recently, the details of the gathering was published in the Church Bulletin so that anyone staying in the vicinity would be welcomed to join in.  Otherwise it would be just the four families and a partcipating community facilitator.  Early that morning I got a message that one of the families could not make it, then later in the afternoon I received another message this time from the community facilitator that she too could not make the session.  So when my kids later asked me if I thought the numbers would increase due to the publication in the Church Bulletin, I told them on the contrary it may be lower.  How then? came the next question, well I said…. it did not matter how many showed up eventually.  We would still continue even if it was only our own family because as the Lord Jesus Christ said, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I will be in their midst.”  God will send his flock if He so willed…..
    Evening came, a total of three families were gathered and just as we were about to start, a new member and her daughter showed up.  We welcomed them and started with our programme.  I decided a little later to share with the group how God had changed my life and give testimony to His Great Glory! How the Holy spirit guided me and increased my faith and how I witnessed His hand in so many areas of our family life and the extraordinary things that took place which I call ‘mini miracles’.  Thereafter two members of each of the other families shared their testimony for the day….
One shared that as evening approached, he was still struggling to complete an assignment which left him stumped and so was not sure if he could make it for our session in the evening.  He paused and said a short prayer afterwhich he found the answers he was looking for.
The second, a lady had a similar situation in that she was given a last minute project to complete and she too was uncertain if she could complete in time.  She prayed that if God really wanted her to attend our session He would come to her aid.  Praise the Lord! she completed everything…
In hindsight, we see how by surrendering ourselves to God’s divine providence, we were able to share His Word for us and bask in His love.
I encourage you, sisters and brothers in Christ to always give Glory to God by sharing your witness, your testimonies.
28 Sept 2011
“Your thoughts are not my thoughts, your words are not my words. If you love me do my Will.”
And towards the end of a praise and worship session, I had this strong prompting that……..God loves us whether we are deserving or not and he wants us to love others in the same way.
For those who do not have a relationship with God, do not know what it means to be in one and have no experience of God in their lives then just continue to do what you are doing.  You are on the right track of how NOT to have a relationship with Him let alone a deeper one.   Am I trying to drive you further away from God our Father? No on the contrary, I am trying to create an awareness of what are the ways that might keep us away from Him.
From personal experience it is harder for someone to experience God when he/she is looking at life through tinted lenses and clogged ears.  What do I mean? Well because of our sinful ways, we often times choose to see the world the way we want to, act on our every desires and do not care that it is not God’s will for us.  The tint and clogged ears refers to sin in our lives hence the discoloured view and the inability to listen to the Word of God.
Here are some of the obstacles i.e. thoughts or actions that prevents us from a meaningful relationship with God our Father :-
  • Not worshipping Him and not rightfully giving Him thanks and praise for all He has provided for us.  Thinking that whatever we have is by our own doing.
  • Not praying and seeking His wisdom and counsel in all things.
  • Think we are in control of everything.
  • Thinking we have lots of time to repent and turn our lives around, so we do what we want to do. Live life like that is no tomorrow, party on…
  • Treat the Sunday Eucharistic Celebration as a day of obligation.
  • Arriving late for Mass and leaving before the last hymn is sung and not praying in thankgiving thereafter.
  • Receiving the Eucharist even though we have committed grave sin/s.
  • Letting our addictions control our lives without actively seeking help egs. Alcoholism, pornography, gambling, receational drug taking etc.
  • Believing that most of the traditions and Sacraments of the Church are man-made and hence can be ignored afterall God knows our heart.
  • We are only human and so God will understand if we give in to our weak nature.
  • Read scripture like we are reading a book or magazine.
  • Not doing a proper examination of conscience before going for the sacrament of reconciliation.
  • Not making every effort to refrain from committing the sins we confessed.
  • Cursing and swearing is okay because everyone is doing so.
  • Believing that modesty is only in the heart.
  • Intentionally exposing ourselves to explicit movies.
  • Thinking it is okay to oggle hunks and babes in egs. swimsuit magazines etc.
  • Not making every effort to increase in faith or knowledge of our Faith.
  • Not praying regularly.
  • Viewing the world as a ‘dog eat dog’ one and survival is only for the fittest.
  • Watching Television for hours on end.
  • Thinking that community service is only for those who have the time.
  • There is Me, Myself And I.
  • Work, work and more work 7 days a week.  I will rest when I’m dead or when I’m too old to.
  • Life is all about happiness and the pursuit of it.
  • Life is all about money and the pursuit of it.
  • The ten commandments are only guidelines or just a movie.
  • Communion is between me and God only.
The list provided is by no means exhaustive as there are many other areas not explored here like idolatry in things, items, celebrities, money etc. then there is relativism and much more.
Let us pray for one another, that we may all grow in faith and deepen our relationship with God our Father who loves us.  Amen.
Our Blessed Mother says “I will never abandon you. I will stand by you in all adversity.”
EZRA 1:1:6
1a In the first year of Cyrus,* king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to issue a proclamation throughout his entire kingdom, both by word of mouth and in writing: 2 “Thus says Cyrus, king of Persia: ‘All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD, the God of heaven,* has given to me, and he has charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. 3 Those among you who belong to any part of his people, may their God be with them! Let them go up to Jerusalem in Judah to build the house of the LORD the God of Israel, that is, the God who is in Jerusalem. 4 Let all those who have survived, in whatever place they may have lived, be assisted by the people of that place with silver, gold, goods, and livestock, together with voluntary offerings for the house of God in Jerusalem.’”
5 Then the heads of ancestral houses* of Judah and Benjamin and the priests and Levites—everyone, that is, whose spirit had been stirred up by God—prepared to go up to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem. 6b All their neighbors gave them help in every way, with silver, gold, goods, livestock, and many precious gifts, besides all their voluntary offerings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Isn’t it amazing that the King of Persia not necessarily a believer in the God of Israel was moved to allow God’s people to build His temple in Jerusalem.  And all of them contributed in every way they could in the divine project.

In the Church of St Anthony of Padua Singapore, we are building an annex building so that we can hold more Cathechism classes, hold talks and retreats, Ministry meetings and much, much more, all for the Glory of God our Father.  It would costs and an estimated 5 million dollars! And so we are called, as the exiled people of Israel once was, to help contribute to this project.

But is that all to the message in this First Reading of today from the Old Testament?  NO! It is so easy to lose sight of the deeper message contain within it.  It is a call to each and everyone of us TODAY to build God’s Kingdom, His temple, within us and thereby his Holy Church the one true Body of Christ.  With the gold of our hearts and the silver of our hands all true love and in love with Christ and in Christ.

The Gospel of today also tells us that we should do so without fear of reprisal or of persecution.  To be a light for all to see not to be covered with a bowl or to placed under the bed…..

Luke 8:16-18

“Open your ears, I tell you, to hear his teaching – and it is this: voluntary poverty; patience in the face of injury; returning good to those who do us evil; being little, humble, oppressed and forsaken in the world; putting up with ridicule, torment, wrongs, insults, detraction, gossip, difficulties, and harassment from the world, from devils seen and unseen, and from our own stinking flesh which (rebel that it is) is always wanting to defy its creator and fight against the spirit.  It means suffering with patience and resisting the devils with the weapons of hatred and of love.

Slight Change In Postures During Mass In Singapore

Posted: September 15, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys, Memory Book

Apart from the changes in the Roman Missal. In Singapore, there will two slight changes in the postures during mass.

1) At the offertory, we would normally stand at the point when the priest says “pray brethren that your sacrifice and mine…” However now we will remain seated and stand only when we reply says “May The Lord….”

2) After the Santus (holy holy Holy) we will remain kneeling all the way till the end of the doxology followed by the great Amen. (through him with him and in him….amen)

The Holy Name Of Mary

Posted: September 12, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys

Richard of Saint Laurence states “there is not such powerful help in any name, nor is there any other name given to men, after that of Jesus, from which so much salvation is poured forth upon men as from the name of Mary.”  He continues, “that the devout invocation of this sweet and holy name leads to the acquisition of superabundant graces in this life and a very high degree of glory in the next.”

The Abbot Francone, speaking on this subject, says, “there is no other name after that of the Son, in heaven or on earth, whence pious minds derive so much grace, hope and sweetness.”  After the most sacred name of Jesus, the name Mary is so rich in every good thing, that on earth and in heaven there is no other from which devout souls receive so much grace,hope, sweetness.

Hence Richard of Saint Laurence”encourages sinners to have recourse to this great name,” because it alone will suffice to cure them of all their evils; and “there is no disorder, however malignant, that does not immediately yield to the power of the name of Mary.”  The Blessed Raymond Jordano says, “that however hardened and diffident a heart may be, the name of this most Blessed Virgin has such efficacy, that if it is only pronounced that heart will be wonderfully softened.” Moreover, it is well known, and is daily experienced by the clients of Mary, that her powerful name gives the particular strength necessary to overcome temptations against purity.  In fine, “thy name, O Mother of God, is filled with divine graces and blessings,” as Saint Methodius says.  So much so that Saint Bonaventure declares, “that thy name, O Mary, cannot be pronounced without bringing some grace to him who does so devoutly.”…..Grant, O Lady, that we may often remember to name thee with love and confidence; for this practice either shows the possession of divine grace, or else is a pledge that we shall soon recover it.

Saint Alphonsus De Liguori

+1787 Doctor of the Church

*Memorial*

Our salvation begins when an archangel speaks the name of Mary.  To be Christian is to carry on that Annunciation unceasingly, Saint Louis De Montfort wrote that “the salvation of each individual is bound up with the Hail Mary”.  This prayer that names the holy name of the Mother of God “brought to a dry and barren world the Fruit of Life.  It will cause the Word of God to take root in the soul and bring forth Jesus.”   The holy name of Mary bears such power because of the unique bond between Mother and Son. “When God sent his Son born of a woman, he instituted a once and for all order of salvation in which the union of Mother and Child stands at the centre” ( Romanus Cessario).  To accept the divine privilege of speaking the name of Mary is to participate in that saving union.

CatholicJules Journeys On….

Posted: August 26, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys

When I first truly started my faith journey late last year, I decided to start a blog so that others could share my experiences, even the knowledge I’ve gained and anything new I learn from day to day.  After all, the original blog I started when I was first introduced to blogging did pretty well.  I now refer to it as my ‘secular’ blog because it contained nothing about my faith whatsoever.  Amazingly enough, I have todate approximately 400,000 hits on that blog entitled ‘Living Life With A Passion’  even after I have stopped posting write-ups on it.  I now occasionally upload photos to it only when I have the time.  All my time is now spent updating this blog whenever I can because I believe it a kingdom building tool in which I can contribute to in my small way.

In the beginning I wondered if there was anyone even interested in sharing this journey with me, as it had kicked off to a very,very slow start.  Now I have a promising 11,000 hits since it’s birth 11 months ago.  My only aim is to evangelise and bring others to this truly wonderful faith of ours and to help fellow Catholics grow in faith, as I am constantly doing so myself.

Lately I found another way in which I could link this blog to a Facebook page. And I have done so not for personal glory, but in hopes of reaching out to a greater target audience.  I feel that most busy people will not bother to click a direct link to a blog but may do so while looking through updates of their friends or pages they subscribe to on Facebook.  Anyhow in order to get a direct link address on Facebook I will need 25 Likes.  Right now I have only 3 but honestly it does not really matter, I just pray that I will be able to do my part in reaching out to more people through this media so that they too can experience God’s love for us.  I know full well that it is God our Father who is the only one who can convert and strengthen hearts through His sanctifying grace.

So if you can please help spread the word………..

No Request Too Small

Posted: August 6, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys

How often do we overlook the importance of prayer. Thinking to ourselves that God our Father has more important things on His hands then to listen to our ramblings, petitions, grievances etc.

In reality we should offer everything up to our Father in prayer. Our thanks, our praise, our all! This is our privilege to remain in communion with Him, to experience His love for us and to love Him with all our hearts.

As I grow in faith, I have come to realise that there is nothing too small or insignificant that I cannot talk to my Father about. If I am patient enough and truly listen with my heart he answers me in His time. At times even in an instant!

I have many such instances, however I offer now the most recent…. Today. While waiting for my kids to finish their swimming lesson, I decided to take out my Kindle to start on a new book. I had just finished reading ‘Rome sweet home a great book by the way of which I highly recommend. Anyhow I have a balance of about forty plus titles to choose from and wanted one which would be more appropriate for either this period of time or relevant for growing in my faith. So I offered it up in prayer asking for His guidance. I then scanned through the titles and chose ‘Mass revision’ by Jimmy Akin. Was it my own decision? Since I was aware the liturgy was changing shortly? I found my answer after reading the introduction. At the end of it was this:-

In The Quiet (personal reflection)

Posted: August 5, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys

I sought and in a sense constantly seek spiritual direction. What questions do I ask my Spiritual Director when my Lord reveals the answers gradually before my meeting?

Perhaps I was not listening at the time of my dire need or quest for answers. Only in the silence of my heart do I truly listen.

Personal Reflection

Posted: August 4, 2011 by CatholicJules in Life's Journeys

I had no love of scripture till now. It used to be too hard, confusing at times and time consuming.
Today I love it for it’s depth, the pure love it brings forth and the deep personal relationship it builds.

Although I may not be as passionate as my brethren, yet I find myself unfulfilled when talks or scripture sharing does not embrace fully all the dimensions, layers or depth the Word has to offer. Then again is it even possible at one seating?

Matt 25:36

How many of us will ever get an opportunity to visit someone in prison in his/her lifetime? But if you did have an opportunity to visit someone, then is that all you have to do?  How many trapped behind prison walls have more freedom then those on the outside because they have found God’s love through his son Jesus?  And it was all because someone like you had brought the love of Jesus to them.

Still there are many, maybe more on the outside who are trapped in their own personal ‘prisons’ and remain trapped because they never knew the love, peace and comfort that God offers them through His son Jesus Christ.  Someone like you and me can share Him with them to set them free!

Let us first identify some of them who are in ‘prison’ :-

  • Those who have an addiction…..
  • Those who are lonely…..
  • Those who feel abandoned….
  • Those who are sick and depressed….
  • Those who are aged and depressed because their children no longer make the time to visit them….
  •  Those who are hurt and angry and refuse to forgive…
  • Those who have never experienced true love…
  • Those searching for God and feel they have not found him…
  • Those who remain in sin….
  • Those who have been brought up to believe that survival is for the fittest only….
These are just a few examples and as you know there are many other forms out there.  So how do we help? Where do we start?
We can start by telling them that God loves them and move on from there…….Pray….listen….share…..pray….listen….share……pray……
God loves you my dear sisters and brothers and so do I !
